First Security Bank Announces O'Brien Retirement

February 1st, 2021: After contributing nearly 24 years to a banking career at First Security, Colleen O’Brien is set to retire on February 2nd.

Colleen, originally from Minnesota, started her married life with several moves due to her husband’s career. In 1997, they made a final move from Missouri to Charles City and they decided to settle down.

Having active children, Colleen wanted a job that was both family friendly and didn’t require a commute. Due to all the traveling over the years, Colleen had adapted to and learned a variety of jobs. She was accustomed to trying new things and broadening her skills and knowledge in different fields of work. With these thoughts in mind, she started a banking career in October of 1997 at First Security.

Colleen started by helping customers make payments in the “loan window”. Soon, a floater position became available in the loan department and Colleen was able to gain experience in many areas of lending. She helped in the agricultural and commercial, real estate, and consumer loan departments whenever needed. Later, she became more specialized in the consumer loan department before moving into the loan operations department, where she is retiring from. In her final role at First Security, she handled a variety of jobs relating to consumer loans, credit cards, bankruptcy and small claims, as well as credit and disability insurance.

Over her long career, Colleen has experienced many changes in the banking industry. At First Security, she experienced the transition from paper to electronic versions of records, the implementation of video banking, the major remodel to the Charles City bank office, and the construction of First Security’s new office in Manly.

Colleen is grateful she took a chance 24 years ago on a new career in banking. She’s met many great people along the way and has had opportunities to be involved in the community that was once new to her.

After retirement, Colleen especially looks forward to spending more time with her husband, Lenny, and their children and grandchildren. She hopes to have more time to help with her grandchildren’s activities, work on some of her personal hobbies, and do some volunteering. Additionally, Colleen and Lenny enjoy camping and are hoping to accomplish some traveling.
