Recently, Hampton-Dumont High School’s ProStart culinary team achieved a first-time championship for the school by claiming first place at the Iowa ProStart Invitational competition. To compete, the team had to prepare a three-course meal within one hour using only two butane burners. Their menu included a pan seared scallop wrapped prosciutto, wagyu steak au poivre (pepper-corn steak) with carrots vichy, and a lemon curd and strawberry curd with meringue for dessert.
As state champions, they will travel to Washington, D.C. for the National ProStart Invitation to compete against teams from the other 49 states as well as some United States territories such as Puerto Rico. Teams that place in the top five could score full ride scholarships to culinary school.
To help the team compete at the national level, First Security donated $1,250. The money will be used to upgrade many of their cooking utensils which could include new burners, knives, and chef coats.
“It’s really exciting to see these kids get recognized for all their hard work, time, and dedication,” commented Ron Raney, Market President at First Security. “We are happy to help them on their journey to D.C. and we can’t wait to see the results of the competition!”
