After a banking career spanning 40 years, Janet Stangl plans to retire.
Stangl first joined First Security as a bookkeeper and worked within the bookkeeping department until 1997. During that time, her title changed to customer service representative. In 1997, she transferred to the loan department, where she has worked for the last 20 years. During this time, she held a variety of positions including consumer loan secretary, consumer collateral servicing clerk, and real estate collateral servicing clerk.
During her long career with First Security, Stangl has experienced many changes. She’s worked for a total of 9 different managers, been through several bank remodels, and even worked through a couple of floods. She has also experienced a transformation of the banking industry as a whole. When Stangl started her career, bank processes were very manual compared to the high tech, electronic methods of today. For example, the work involved in preparing bank statements is far more streamlined than it was 40 years ago.
“On my second day of work I got to experience a statement day,” remembers Stangl. “The bank used to close at 3 PM and every employee would work together to assist with stuffing statements into envelopes, apply postage, and taking those statements to the post office that same day.”
Despite an overwhelming second day, work got easier as time went on. With 40 years of experience and banking knowledge, Stangl has been a great resource for her coworkers.
“Janet has always been very helpful with resolving any questions. She’s very dedicated to doing the very best at her job,” said Colleen O’Brien, who worked with Stangl for nearly 23 years. “We will miss having her at the bank. However, we’re very excited for her to enjoy retirement.”
After retirement, Stangl plans to enjoy her mornings. She will spend more time with her husband, Randy, and their family. With her extra time, she hopes to pick up some hobbies like reading, sewing, and craft projects, as well as making time for outdoor walks and reconnecting with old friends. She also plans to do some traveling.
First Security is planning a private celebration for Janet on her last day, July 3rd.
