Penny Gray Retiring after 23 Years of Service

Penny Gray, Vice President/Marketing Manager at First Security, is set to retire from the bank in April after more than 23 years of service. She joined the bank in 1996 with over 20 years of retail banking and marketing experience.

Gray joined First Security as the Business Development Secretary in the Marketing Department. In 2002, she was promoted to Retail Banking Officer. Her duties included supervising all retail banking areas including the Tellers and Personal Bankers. At that time, she was also responsible for many marketing tasks.

As First Security grew, so did Gray’s responsibilities. In 2004, she was promoted to Vice President and oversaw Marketing and Retail Banking.

“Being on the forefront of a growing, progressive, community bank has been energizing,” explained Gray. “Working with the management team to develop new products and services while growing our footprint has been amazing.”

During her tenure, the Better BEE Saving Club was born and the implementation of the Kasasa suite of products came to fruition. First Security’s first website was built and the age of electronic banking began to emerge.

“There is always a new challenge just around the corner. First Security grew from a $220 million bank to nearly $500 million bank in the past 23 years,” commented Gray.

In 2010, she was awarded the Certified Financial Marketing Professional (CFMP) designation from the Institute of Certified Bankers (ICB), a subsidiary of the American Bankers Association, in Washington, D.C. The CFMP designation is awarded to individuals who demonstrate excellence in the field of financial services marketing.

“First Security believes in continuing education to develop financial professionals with expertise in their field,” explained Gray. “Earning this designation was the highlight of my career.”

Gray has been involved with the community as past President of Community Revitalization, and she has also served on the boards of the United Way, Arts Council, and Chamber of Commerce. She’s also served on various boards and committees with the banking world.

“It was an honor to serve on the ABA School of Bank Marketing and Management Advisory Board, along with Iowa Bankers Association Marketing Committee,” recalled Gray. She also served as a Student Advisor for the ABA School of Bank Marketing and Management while on the ABA Advisory Board from 2010-2015.

There is a new Marketing Manager in town! Matt Bradley has joined First Security to step into Penny Gray’s role as she retires.

“This is a different type of transition,” says Gray. “It was my goal to welcome Mr. Bradley prior to retiring. Having the time to help him become acquainted with the communities we serve and get to know our staff has been a gift.”

Retirement holds a new journey for Gray. She and her husband have a true passion for Labrador Retrievers. Her thirst for knowledge and love of research is leading her toward the fascinating field of Animal Behavior.
